Fenland Poetry and Verse - and More

Working out on the fen was tough but love blossoms!

Love in the Turf Fields

by Neil Ford

There’s a lad on the turf fields, he makes my heart skip
He’s working the barrow and smiles when he passes
The diggers they rib us and make fun when we stand
But I know Father likes him and will give him my hand

We're dancing, we're spinning, He's holding me close
In love and so happy we’ll cling to this time
He's talked to my Father and we're due to be wed
We'll live down the lane once the bans have been read

We'll live down by the lode like our families before us
Make a home and have youngsters – a few
We'll work out on the fen and live off the land
A life good and happy but nothing too grand

We're dancing, we're spinning, He's holding me close
In love and so happy we’ll cling to this time
He's talked to my Father and we're due to be wed
We'll live down the lane once the bans have been read

My happiness springs from the lad that I love
He’s kind and hard-working and fair
His smile lights his face when he walks through the door
A Wicken-bred girl could never want more

We're dancing, we're spinning, He's holding me close
In love and so happy we’ll cling to this time
He's talked to my Father and we're due to be wed
We'll live down the lane once the bans have been read
