We think nothing grows until the warmth of the spring
But this is so far from correct
There are signs of new growth as the leaves are still falling
Not always seen and quite hard to detect
Even in winter some leaves still hang on
Until there's a bitter cold night
Then they rain down later and leave the tree bare
Quite stark in the winter sunlight
But hang on a minute. Did you take a close look?
At the branches for some signs of life first
When you do it's amazing to see what you'll find
The chubby new buds just waiting to burst
In the cold of the winter it's hard to believe
That new life is there breaking through
The spikes of new growth from the snowdrops
And the pale green leaves of the daffodils will show
